Exchange Programmes

EUROPEAN EXCHANGE PROGRAMME

The European Exchange Programme was initiated by the National Trust – the world-renowned organisation of monument preservation and environmental protection – of Great Britain, in 1995. An international conference in Great Britain was organised as the first step in the experimental stage of the programme to share the National Trust's 100 years experience with Western and Eastern European participants. Romania was represented by Mr. Árpád FURU. The accumulated experiences have determined significantly both the identification of the name of the Transylvania Trust set up in 1995 and the elaboration of its structure.

Two professionals representing the North Wales Region of the National Trust: Mrs. Jane GALLAGHER and Mr. Stephen KANE visited Romania as a second step of the exchange programme, being guided on a one and a half-week field trip by the staff of the Transylvania Trust.

The Pan European Conference on Monument Preservation, organised in Brussels, October 1996 was the third step of the programme. The Transylvania Trust was represented by its executive director Mr. Bálint SZABÓ. Thanks to a scholarship provided by UK/ICOMOS two department executive directors of Transylvania Trust – Ms. Dorottya MAKAY and Mr. Árpád FURU – studied the structure, activities and achievements of The National Trust, North Wales Region and the National Trust for Scotland, during a seven-week-long study-trip in October-November, 1996. As a following stage of the European Exchange Programme the National Trust organized a conference in Britain in 1998. This time participants together with the host organisation staff-members worked together on smaller preservation issues.

In June 1999, as part of the Rimetea Heritage Protection Programme – and the next stage of the European Exchange Programme - professionals from the National Trust for Scotland worked with Mr. Árpád FURU in Rimetea on the application for the inclusion of Rimetea in the Monument World Heritage List. Expenses of the exchange programme were covered by the National Trust from European Union funds.

US/ICOMOS SUMMER INTERNSHIPS

The US/ICOMOS Summer Internships are coordinated and organised yearly by the United States National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (US/ICOMOS). In the framework of the programme young professionals from all over the world are involved in three month long professional field-work. At the same time young American professionals visit and experience preservation institutions and organisations in the partner countries.

Colleagues from the Transylvania Trust have taken part in US/ICOMOS Summer Internships delegated by the Hungarian National Committee of ICOMOS in 1995 and 1997. The Transylvania Trust as an organisation established an exchange programme on mutual basis with US/ICOMOS in 1998. Under this programme Mrs. Imola KIRIZSÁN, department executive director worked in California on industrial monument surveys, and Mr. Todd Andreas GROVER took part in the survey and state assessment programmes of the Transylvania Trust. The expenses of these internships have been covered by US/ICOMOS.
